# What is tesamorelin, exactly?

The name is a mouthful. Start with the purpose of the medicine, then ask whether that purpose matches the change you hope for.

## A name for a medicine, not a whole kind of care.

Think of a peptide as tiny chemical parts linked into a short chain, much like a necklace.

As of September 2026, that word alone tells you neither a product’s approval status nor its safety.

Growth hormone is a body signal that helps build tissue and break down fat in adults.

Tesamorelin is made in a lab to copy the natural signal that tells a gland to release growth hormone.

Ask what result the care team expects from releasing more of that signal in your case.

### Is it the same thing as growth hormone?

Tesamorelin tells the pituitary, the gland that releases growth hormone, to send out more of your body’s own growth hormone.

If the offer focuses on hormone levels, ask how that connects to the change you want.

## The approved purpose is narrow.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval covered extra belly fat in adults with HIV-related lipodystrophy (September 2026).

HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus; lipodystrophy means body fat has shifted to different places.

The main trials measured deep belly fat around the organs.

The label did not approve tesamorelin for weight loss, as of September 2026.

Body weight changed little in those main studies.

## Get the full product name.

The two tesamorelin products were EGRIFTA SV and EGRIFTA WR (September 2026).

The two versions are different. The label says they cannot replace each other.

No generic or other copy of tesamorelin had FDA approval in September 2026.

A generic medicine has approval as a copy of a medicine marketed with a brand name.

Ask for the full product name in writing. A short name in an advert is not enough detail for your care conversation.
